I just checked my mail (not an easy prospect - it involves going down four flights of stairs, then back up) to learn that I had received my first two Christmas cards of the season. One, unsurprisingly, is from my preternaturally considerate friend Carol.

The other is from my neighbourhood garbagemen.

I am a little weirded out here: our garbagemen gave us a Christmas card. Now I feel I have to start throwing out nicer stuff.

What? No poisoned mail from South American water rodents??? No tales of love, deceit and betrayal whilst trudging downstairs. How sad...

In fact you will note I said "back up" but I didn't say "back up the stairs" which were completely blocked by snarling hordes of South American water rodents, determined to succeed in getting my arm where before they had failed. So I had to go out, climb the conveniently located high spot that is the cathedral, launch a cable across to my window and go hand-over-hand to my apartment whilst amazed tourists snapped photos of my from the streets below. Sorry I forgot to mention that. Your pants dry off from traversing the rice paddy yet?

Uh. I'm not competing with that. I just can't win.

But someday I will write the poem version of my rice paddy escapades, and then you'll see!
